Wedding Customs – Comparing The East And West

“Getting married means that a couple is bound together to become one. All over the world, there are different ceremonies and customs surrounding the way people are wed depending on their culture.

Asian weddings, particularly Chinese and Indian, usually have red as a dominant color in the clothing worn by the bride and the entourage and in the decor. Color red is associated with good fortune according to Indian and Chinese customs. Though many people today would find the Chinese wearing white during weddings, it was not always like this in the past. White was once viewed as a bad color in historical sense because this color was always seen in funerals and in mourning.

Today, brides wear the same dress all throughout the ceremony though there are some who may also opt to change their dresses just like the Chinese. Wearing a white wedding gown is actually a more recent trend compared to the wearing of other darker colors such as red during weddings.

The giving of diamonds to the bride has also been practiced for a long time now, beginning in about the early 19th century. To many people, giving a diamond to the soon to be bride shows the everlasting love for her by the groom. This is one of the most common western practices these days.

One of the wedding customs that the eastern and western countries share is the use of a veil. It is believed that when the bride is wearing a veil, this is protecting her from being seen by evil spirits and jealous suitors. It is also believed to be a bad luck if the groom will see the bride on the wedding day before the ceremony, which is why the two never get dressed in the same room or building.

These are just some of the wedding customs of the western and eastern countries. And though they may have different customs, one thing that remains the same is their intention to be united with their partners forever in the holy sacrament of matrimony.

For those who are about to get married to someone with a different nationality, it’s best to ask your partner about their own wedding customs so that you can be able to prepare for your wedding without having conflicts along the way. This can help you make a compromise. It is important that both of you as well your families agree on this.

If you’re thinking of a unique, out-of-town wedding, make sure you hire a destination wedding coordinator to save you from the stress of wedding preparations, especially if you’re planning something different. Or, if you think traditional is how you want your wedding to be, a St Paul wedding planner would still be helpful.
