Is Nicotine A Stress Reliever

Almost all smokers believe that smoking relieves them of stress. They point out that this is one of the main reasons why they find it very difficult to quit. By lighting up a cigarette they think that it will relieve them of the situations where they are in brought by stress. And by inhaling the smoke that contains nicotine, they believe it will relieve their irritability, it will give them some peace of mind and it will make them more relaxed.

On the other hand, it’s quite surprising to see how non-smokers are able to cope up with stress without light a single cigarette. They don’t need nicotine to be relaxed nor to have some peace of mind. So it’s very difficult to understand the reasons given by smokers that they need a cigarette in order to handle stress. Well in fact, smokers have been confronting the difficulties in life before they started smoking and handled all of them well without the aid of nicotine.

There are many factors that make life interesting and challenging and stress is one of them. How we deal with it will determine on who we really are. Are we really that weak or are we that strong enough to outlast such events presented that will make us a better person. Stress is all around us and we don’t need nicotine or cigarette for that matter to relieve us from it.

Actually, it is not stress that smoking relieves, guess what, it’s the nicotine withdrawal symptoms that’s being relieved not solely stress itself. Whenever the nicotine levels inside the body of the smoker goes down, his body undergoes a state where negative emotions will be felt if nicotine is not replaced soon enough. But this malady is only temporary and once the body recuperates from nicotine dependency, everything will go back to normal.

Sooner or later, the smoker will decide to quit smoking for good. Be it because of health or financial reasons, there will come a time when he will decide to quit (well I guess not all of them). The smoker has to admit the truth that smoking is not really helping him to cope up with stress. Rather nicotine is making his life more prone to stress because of withdrawal symptoms. The sooner the smoker accepts this truth the easier he will be able to quit smoking successfully.

Strong determination is needed when one wants to quit smoking for good. One has to deal with nicotine withdrawal symptoms while trying to cope up with stress. It’s not a difficult task. With proper conditioning of the mind, by accepting the truth that smoking is bad, the withdrawal stage will be a great experience as a sign of freedom and strength to cope once again with stress without nicotine.
