Important Things To Know About Distance Learning

Recent developments have led to the popularity of distance learning as a way to earn a degree that in the past wouldn’t have been possible for those with work, families or both. Distance learning can be done at one’s convenience, at home with online connection, and it is accessible for everyone, regardless of where they may be in the USA, or even outside the country.

But most of us may be best suited for the human touch of a real classroom – distance learning isn’t meant for every Tom, Dick and Harry. There is no substitute for a few things offered in a traditional college setting that have helped a lot of people learn – three things to be very precise. These three features are all related to human interaction – a live professor’s explanation, note-taking on a student’s part, and face-to-face communication between student and teacher.

Since these three elements of the human touch are not present in distance learning, it can be a strange way to learn for many, and therefore ineffective as compared to traditional learning.

The key to success in distance learning is accepting that there are certain elements of traditional education that cannot be found in any virtual course. It can be hard for some of us to accept these things.

Self-motivation and the lack of a real teacher’s prodding can make distance learning unsuccessful for the less motivated ones among us. Real-life learning includes the gentle (or not-so-gentle) motivation from a teacher to complete required assignments and study for quizzes. Avoid minor or major distractions and pay full attention when you have to – just because this is a self-paced course isn’t an excuse to pay it no heed or to relax needlessly.

Distance learning may be best for working students, but not if you have too much on the table and too little time to spare. Let’s say you’re studying next to the pool, while your spouse grills the burgers and your kids are swimming – kids can be reckless, so what if one of them pulls you AND your laptop into the pool? You can mix a hectic job with your distance learning course, which is like mixing a lit match with kerosene, because too much focus on either could cost you your job, your studies, and/or your sanity!

Distance learning has benefited a lot of us with busy schedules, and may continue to benefit more of us who want to finish our studies somehow. But if your schedule is too hectic, forget about it.
