Apologizing Isn’t Easy – Here Are 5 Ways That Work

It’s tough to find the right way to apologize to your girlfriend, isn’t it? Have you grown tired of the bickering and shouting, the arguing, punctuated by long periods of the silent treatment? Did you do something wrong? If you’d like to get your relationship back on an even keel, you’re going to have to apologize to her, regardless of why she’s upset. Keep in mind, though, that your apology can repair your relationship or destroy it altogether. The quality of your relationship should be enhanced if you follow these guidelines.

Step 1: If it really is your fault, man up and take responsibility.

We usually avoid admitting that we’re wrong, even when we are, because it’s so difficult. When making amends, if you did something wrong, your only first step is to admit it. Part of being a man means taking responsibility for your actions, not making excuses. You’ve got to tell her what it was you did wrong, and then – and this is essential – you must promise never to do it again. The essential parts of an apology are admitting that you’re wrong, and promising that it won’t happen again.

Step 2: Accept the consequences.

Don’t expect that things will immediately smooth over and all will be forgiven and forgotten as soon as you apologize. Now, however long it takes her to cool off depends a great deal on what you did and her personality. When a guy mans up and apologizes for something he does wrong, though, most girls worth keeping will appreciate it. Taking responsibility for your actions includes accepting her response. When you apologize, you cannot set terms or insist that she accept it automatically. You cannot expect a successful apology if you don’t follow through with this step.

Step 3: Calm down and cool off!

It’s inevitable – even in the best of relationships, people will sometimes say something they later regret. If you’re in a circumstance where something like this might happen, try to take a time-out to think things through and calm down. The sort of impetuous things we say when we’re angry often are regrettable when considered in the cold light of day, and so those circumstances should be avoided. You’ve got to let tempers cool – take a walk to let things cool off. Rational thinking is crucial in times like this.

Step 4: Pump her up.

Don’t just tell her you love her, do something, make a commitment of time and effort that makes the point with a bang! Whatever you do, it should be oriented to her, and you should take care of all the preparations yourself. You can get her gifts, of course, but don’t let them take the place of some special gesture you make. If the gestures you make aren’t from the bottom of your heart, though, she’ll know and your relationship will suffer. If you really want her to know how sorry you feel and that you want to be building your relationship together, gestures like these are excellent approaches. All things considered, failure to make her feel good after you apologize will diminish the value and meaning of the apology.

Step 5: Let sleeping dogs lie.

This is how the apology closes – you put the issue to rest and start moving forward together. Your relationship is about the joy of being together today and in the future, not yesterday’s mistakes. Past mistakes don’t contribute to today’s relationship – let them go. Life is tough enough that dragging up baggage from the past makes no sense. Your focus now has to be on building your relationship and enjoying life together, not letting old mistakes fester in the back of your mind.

When you find yourself having to apologize to your girlfriend, keep these steps in mind. Remember, it’s not unthinkable to make a mistake. When we can learn from our mistakes and put them behind us, then our lives will be better.
