The Tradition Of Auburn Tiger’s Big 3 Sports

Auburn football began play back in 1892. The team’s first bowl game appearance came during the 1936 season. As of the year 2009, Tiger football has 78 winning seasons, 35 bowl appearances, & 10 conference championships. Auburn has been a member of the SEC since 1933. This was the inaugural season of this conference. Auburn has won 6 SEC championships. Auburn ranks 13 overall in total wins in D-1A college football history. The Tigers has only 1 “official” national title in football coming in 1957. Auburn football has two prior Heisman Trophy winners. Pat Sullivan claimed this title in 1971 & Bo Jackson in 1985. Bo Jackson was a well-remembered player. He was known for his punishing style of running while also fast for a man his size. Auburn’s big rivalry team is Alabama. Each time these two play the game is called the “Iron Bowl”.

There have been 25 total coaches in the history of the program including Pat Dye, Terry Bowden, & Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville lead the team for 10 years & posted a record of 85-40 from 1999-2008. The coach with the most success early in the football program was Mike Donahue. He compiled a total record of 106-35-5 over two separate tenures (1904-1906, 1908-1922). Both Mike Donahue & Pat Dye have been elected in to the College Football Hall Of Fame. The current head coach at Auburn is Gene Chizik.

Auburn baseball has a long lists of coaches. The winningest baseball coach in their school history posted an unbelievable 65.9% winning percentage during his reign of over 15 years but no national titles. The Tigers haven’t been able to find a solid replacement since the winningest coach left the program. With 3 coaches over the past 9 seasons Auburn has failed to regain that prominence on the baseball diamond. What can you expect after losing the best baseball coach in school history?

Tiger basketball began play back in 1905. Auburn basketball plays behind the cover of the football program. Tiger basketball has been through a total of 19 coaches since 1905. The all-time winningest coach for Auburn is Joel Eaves. Sonny Smith was probably the most well-known coach in the program’s history. He coached the likes of Charles Barkley & was elected to the the Alabama Sports Hall Of Fame in 2007.

Former Tiger great & NBA great Charles “Sir Charles” Barkley. Great legendary coach in Sonny Smith. A man (Cliff Ellis) that took the program to new heights with sweet sixteen appearances in 1999 & 2003. A recent change in 2010 to another head coach (Tony Barbee). Can a guy with some success at UTEP take over a basketball program that has been going downhill over the past few years?
