Having a child is an incredibly exciting thing. Before your child was born, you probably spent so many hours thinking about what he or she would look like, picking out names, and thinking about all fun experiences you’d share. But then your child was born, and things may not have been exactly as you hoped – he or she acts out more than you expected. It seems that your child has a very defiant attitude.

Many parents find it difficult to admit to themselves that a defiant child isn’t always the ray of sunshine they were hoping for. They may have dreamed about a well-behaved and respectful child, but unfortunately they seem to be out of luck in those departments.

The first thing that parents need to do in this situation is understand that they’re not dealing with the perfect angel they hoped for, but instead they face the problem of disciplining a defiant child.

If you do find yourself with a defiant child, realize that although your child isn’t perfect, you’re not a perfect parent either. If you truly want to help your child rectify his or her poor behavior, learn to be the right kind of parent for your child’s personality.

Instead of simply telling your child to behave more appropriately, give him or her the tools to understand the negative impact of the behavior. Enforce a more rigid structure in your home and avoid fighting for control of the house. Pass on problem-solving skills and accountability to your child.

It’s been said many times that children would stop misbehaving if only they had better self-esteem. However, throughout my years of experience as a parent, coach, and teacher, I’ve found that the opposite is true.

Children build their self-esteem by accomplishing goals and doing the right thing. To help a defiant child learn to behave, teach him or her problem-solving skills as well as the consequences of acting out.

With your child learning these fundamental lessons, he or she will act out less and you will enjoy a more respectful relationship.
