A College Student’s View Of Nightmare On Elm Street
Okay I just got back from seeing the new Freddy movie, and I present to you the Nightmare on Elm Street movie review. Now for those of you who are not familiar with the concept of Freddy Krueger, he’s a guy that plagues a town by killing people in their nightmares, I don’t know how you couldn’t know the concept but here it is just the same. (This does contain spoilers.) The movie was actually pretty good even though it was not a new concept, and surprisingly it was not as scary as I would have first assumed. But don’t let that discourage you.
Beginning with the plot, it was nicely and surprisingly done. Rather than the traditional, start with the main character and follow them through the story, rather this movie intentionally misleads the audience. You think the opening guy is going to be the great protagonist, but he dies. Then you think the next character, then they die. So it begins to make you wonder whether or not there will even be a protagonist or whether it will be the same concept throughout the movie to lead you along. The back story behind Freddy is nicely done, finding a man that could be innocent and blaming him for his suspected crimes against the children, creating a “sins of the parents” vibe.
The characters are not as fully developed as the character of Freddy. We can see Freddy although we do not know the past motivation for him possibly committing the crime, but still there is the full attempt at fleshing out this burned, nightmare killing man. With the other characters, there is a lack of detail placed into them, such as why are they even friends? Their personalities did not match and yet they were close? So it seemed like the writers thought more about how these people would interact rather than why they would.
When it gets a point that you’re not sure when they are dreaming and when they are awake, the action really takes off, and even before that it was steady. And when the worlds of nightmare and reality slowly begin to mesh, it makes the movie even more intense. But up until the end the movie it makes you wonder is Freddy the bad guy? Although I won’t say, I will say that last scene in the movie is confusing. If someone is going to die by Freddy hand, don’t they have to be dreaming? And who the heck is in the last scene?
Overall this movie is worth seeing. With it being a horror film, there was a plot that held a few surprises along the way. If you are one that loves to be scared then look elsewhere. Nonetheless it still gets a 4 out of 5.
